HOW TO HELP THE VICTIMS OF THE LA WILDFIRES

More than 30,000 Los Angeles-area residents have been forced to evacuate, and at least two lives have been lost as wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Southern California. The fires, which began on Tuesday afternoon, have destroyed homes, blanketed roads in soot, and remain largely uncontained.

The New York Times reports that the largest fire, burning in Pacific Palisades, has already scorched over 2,900 acres in the coastal neighborhood. Chaos has unfolded on roads between Malibu and Santa Monica, where some residents were forced to abandon their vehicles. Firefighters, using bulldozers, cleared abandoned cars blocking traffic.

Many homes, schools and businesses have burned to the ground, and over 30,000 residents have been displaces, forced to evacuate from their homes. At the same time, approximately 150,000 homes and buildings are without power as Southern California Edison, the region’s electric utility, has implemented precautionary shutdowns to prevent further fire outbreaks.

“This is going to be devastating — a devastating loss for all of Los Angeles,” said L.A. councilwoman Traci Park in a statement to the Times.

If you are looking for ways to support those affected, here is how to help.
