5 Most Highly-Anticipated San Diego Restaurants Opening This Year

From Casual Pizza Spots to Upscale Steakhouses, Check Out One (or All!) of These Eateries Heading to San Diego in 2020

San Diego is beloved for its gorgeous beaches and sunny weather, but it’s also an up-and-coming foodie destination. Whether you’re looking for a romantic restaurant to celebrate your anniversary or a down-to-earth establishment that the whole family will enjoy, consider this your go-to guide for the most anticipated restaurants opening in San Diego this year.

Gelati & Peccati (North Park)

Looking for a laid-back pizza joint that the kids will love? Opening early this year in North Park, this 800-square-foot shop will sell Roman-style pizza (known for its thick, hearty crust and being served in large squares). After indulging in a few slices, choose from one of the restaurant’s 18 flavors of gelato.

Dave’s Hot Chicken (Pacific Beach)

Hot chicken is all the rage in Los Angeles these days, and the culinary phenomenon is catching on down south as well. Los Angeles-based restaurateur Dave Kopushyan is slated to open 12 eateries in San Diego County this year, starting with one in Pacific Beach this spring. Originally conceived as a parking lot pop-up in East Hollywood, Dave’s Hot Chicken offers Nashville-style hot chicken tenders, sliders, sides, and drinks.

Hitokuchi (Kearny Mesa)

Get your sushi and sake fix at chef John Hong’s forthcoming Hitokuchi, which follows in the footsteps of Hidden Fish, the all-omakase sushi bar he opened last year. Hitokuchi means “one bite” in Japanese, so it’s no surprise that the establishment will serve Korean-Japanese style bites and raw dishes alongside sakes and wines.

Huntress (Gaslamp Quarter)

If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion, make a reservation at Huntress in the Gaslamp Quarter. Helmed by chef James Montejano, the high-end steakhouse and whiskey club will offer a slew of dry-aged steaks as well as Southern California’s largest selection of Japanese whiskey.

The Plot (Oceanside)

Dreamed up by married restaurateurs Jessica and Davin Waite alongside chef Christopher Logan, The Plot is a triple threat: healthy, delicious, and environmentally friendly. Operating under a zero waste-ethos (which includes harvesting produce from an onsite garden) and serving a plant-based menu of everything from pasta to sandwiches to soup, The Plot is good for you and the environment alike.
